Paperless - I AM WIND
FRAMING THE PROBLEM:
The Siemens Energy technicians appreciate the recognition, the UX was very excited about working on a great project in a great industry.
The wind power maintenance technician’s working environment is generally very remote, on the large scale wind farms far from cities. Portions of their jobs will be performed on the ground, but other portions will be performed several hundred feet above ground, inside towers and nacelles. Paper is not an ideal format for this working environment, but laptops or rugged devices can also have size and weight issues.
Considering these industrial conditions, we wanted to take advantage of the latest developments in the 2010 and 2011 mobile computing market. We tested the Apple iPad and iPod devices in rugged cases and on and offline mobile applications with our wind power services technicians, starting last February. We customized applications internally, and had strong support from UCF college interns on the various phases of hardware and software configuration.
